Project Description: On July 9th, 2023 there was a historic rain storm that washed out 40 miles of trails. One of the affected trails is the Appalachian Trail on Bear Mountain. The Appalachian Trail is comprised of stone steps with landings filled with a surfacing material called ‘trail mix’. The trail mix washed out leaving exposed landscaping fabric and small gullies. With the help of the Trail Conference volunteers, the trail will be restored to its pre-storm condition. This project will include using trail mix to fill in washed out sections. This will be done by carrying buckets of trail mix up and down the Appalachian Trail and tamping it down.
Timeline: Work will start May 4th and 5th from 9-3. Meeting location TBD (either Bear Mountain or Perkins Tower). Specifics on meeting location will be distributed by email before the event.
What to Bring: Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty: long pants, shirt with sleeves (short is okay), closed toed shoes, lunch and snacks, at least 2 liters of water (no refill stations), rain gear, sunscreen, bug spray, toilet paper/tissues
Other things to note: Public restrooms will not be available. Use the best LNT practices when using the woods: go 200 ft away from the trail/water source, choose rocks, carry out toilet paper, dig a cathole 6-8” deep and 4-6” wide.
